Hiking in the Rocky Mountain around Fernie is simply spectacular. The 7,000 acres of pristine wilderness at Island Lake provide countless hiking trail opportunities. Whether you are interested in a 30 minute walk or a full day hike, Island Lake will help you reach your goal. Our variety of programs allows you to choose an option best suited to your needs. From joining a Discovery Walk or Adventure Hike to choosing a privately guided trip or self guided tour, the wonders of Island Lake are yours to explore.


Discovery Walks
Our guided Discovery Walks are great for all ages and abilities. Learn about plants and animals unique to our Old Growth Forest and Mountain Lake. From massive 800-year-old Western Red Cedars to tiny wild strawberries, the walks offer new discoveries around every corner.
$10 per adult, $5 per child 12 and under,
1 to 1.5 hour easy walk


Adventure Hikes
These hikes allow guests to experience one of the many trails that explore what lies beyond the Old Growth forest with a trained guide. A sample Adventure Hike objective might provide guests the opportunity to discover the vivid alpine meadows and flowers. As well, as learn about our local and diverse wildlife, while reaching lookouts offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valley below.
$25 per person,
3 to 4 hours, recommended intermediate fitness level


Privately Guided Hiking

Our professional hiking guides will lead the guest(s) to discover places they may not have visited on their own, from alpine meadows to rugged mountain peaks. The guides work closely with the guest(s) in choosing enjoyable and appropriate objectives.
